Introducing Silaria

I've been involved with puppeting for a few years now; mostly at Morphicon and MFF. Earlier this year I decided to have a custom puppet built of my fursona - Silaria. (It's the only way I was going to have a Unicorn I was 100% happy with.)

She arrived in the mail today and she wanted to say hello to all of you!

MFF
I've been trying to post something about MFF since I got home on Monday but every time I started to write something I was interrupted.

MFF in brief for me -
I WAS A BLAST! I spent most of the weekend involved with the Puppet Track. I was a member of the PawPet 101 panel and was able to contribute, hopefully, helpful information and advice to those interested in puppeteering. I got to participate in the FVS and Holiday puppet show. It was a LOT of fun to perform with [info]wildfox, [info]babsbunny, [info]butterscotchvix, Treads Lightly, Akeakami, Santa Fox, Shockwave, and [info]lowen_kind.

I performed in PawPet Idol II in the Master Category this year. I won PawPet Idol last year in the Novice category so Wildfox told me I had to compete at Master level because he'd like to keep the Novice level open for those just starting out.

Well, I wrote a skit called "A Border Collie's Holiday" which basically told a story about my Border Collie puppet Laddy's trip to Scotland and the telling of an old family story (The Scotsman song). The entire skit, including the song was just me; no "PawPet Karaoke" with the music. (Those who attended the WPAFW saw a preview of this skit.) Well - I WON!!! The skit was much improved over it's initial run a WPAFW.

(Now, if I can just figure out what I'm NOT doing a Morphicon when I perform in their puppeteering contest. Swift and I perform at the same level there so we're considering a duet act for that competition.)

The entire ride home [info]swift_fox and I were wondering if Wild would let me compete next year or if he'd make me a judge.

I had a few new badges made. I believe Swift was scanning them so I should have them to show in the near future. I also won quite a few pieces of art in the art show.

Unfortunately I didn't get to take a lot of pictures. I'll need to get them uploaded.

That's about it for my weekend at MFF. I'm looking forward to next year and the new location - the Westin Hotel in Wheeling, IL.

Puppy Video!
Remember a few weeks ago when I mentioned I had video of Edan playing with a balloon (http://silaria.livejournal.com/20552.html)?

Well...

I FINALLY got it off the camera and onto YouTube. It's not great video but it's fun.

ENJOY!!!

1 Week Left Until My Diabetes Walk

The Step Out to Fight Diabetes walk I'm participating in is 1 week away. As of right now, between my online and cash sponsors, I am 2/3 of the way towards my $300 goal.

If you thought about sponsoring me when I first posted about this walk, http://silaria.livejournal.com/17719.html, please think about it again and, if you believe this is a worth cause, please go to my Step Out web site, http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR?pg=personal&fr_id=4760&px=3856158, and make a donation.

Diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases. It's impact on the lives of not just the person with the disease but their friends and family can be devastating.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Silaria

Stepping Out to Fight Diabetes
Hello friends.

This year I am participating in the American Diabetes Association's Step Out to Fight Diabetes walk. The Walk is scheduled for September 30th at the Pittsburgh Zoo.

I have quite a few friends and family who's lives have been impacted by this disease. If I can help raise funds to find a cure, or at the very least a better way to control diabetes, then it is worth the effort.

I am looking for people to sponsor me in my efforts. If you wish to participate, please go to this web site, http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR?pg=personal&fr_id=4760&px=3856158, and click on the Click Here to Sponsor Me button. That will take you to a page where you can enter how much you wish to pledge to my efforts. ANYTHING, even a dollar, is welcome. Please make any contributions by September 29th.

Thank you in advance for your support.

More Sheltie News
I mentioned last week, http://silaria.livejournal.com/14148.html?nc=24, that we were fairly close to bringing a new 4 footed furry friend into our home; a little Sheltie [currently] named Pete.

Yesterday [info]swift_fox, Melody (our Finnish Spitz) and I had an opportunity to meet and interact with Pete, his breeder, and a few of his relatives (Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Half-Sister, and Cousin).

The first thing we noticed when we entered the home was that the Mother's and Grandmother's barks (they were the only 2 our of their crates) were a bit muffled so the first question was "have they been de-barked?". (Info on Debarking: http://www.naiaonline.org/body/articles/archives/debark_qna.htm) Cathy, the breeder, said that all her shelties have been debarked. This surprised us because we were under the impression that dogs being shown could not be altered. However, the fact that he's de-barked, in our opinion, is not a show stopper.

Once all of Pete's relatives were outside, we got to meet him. I'll be perfectly honest, my first reaction was 'he's so small'. (He only comes up to Melody's shoulder.)

He's a very friendly little pup. At first he was only interested in Mel. The two of them checked out each other's scent and were perfectly fine with one another. (We didn't really expect anything different.) Once he as done checking out Mel, he came over to me then finally Swifty. For about 5 minutes he moved back and forth between us and breeder before getting very insistent about going out. (It was that time of the night after all.)

Pete's a fairly laid back guy. Out of his litter of 6, he was toward the middle of the pecking order.

It was also that time of the night for Mel too so, with Cathy's permission Glen took Mel out into the yard with all the other dogs. After about 10 minutes, the Shelties lost interest in her since Cathy's sister and brother-in-law were working in the yard next door. While Glen was outside watching over Mel, Pete came up for about 10 minutes worth of scritching.

I, on the other hand, stayed inside with Cathy, Mom (Emma) and Grandmom (can't remember her name). We started moving down the list of questions we had and there were no surprises. The night even included a quick grooming lesson for the Shelties - including brushing techniques and using a dremel tool for the nails.

Cathy will give me some food so we can either wean him onto something different or keep him on what he currently eats, Eukanuba Small Breed Adult Weight Control. (She doesn't use puppy food because the extra protein in the puppy food tends to make the pup grow too fast and can lead to join problems.) We figure this is equivalent to the Iams Weight Control Lamb Meal & Rice Formula we use to feed Mel and Candy. So, we are debating whether to keep the dogs on separate food or to move Mel off the Iams Senior formula back to the Weight Control. Problem is, I'm not sure what is in the Senior formula that isn't in the Weight Control. The last thing we want to do is hurt Mel to save some money on pet food.

The final thing we discussed was the contract to purchase him. A few of the requirements, which were quite reasonable, was that we had to take him to our vet within 10 days so we can have piece of mind that everything we've been told about his health was true. (We'll also have a copy of his current health certificate showing his shot record.) We also have to have him neutered before we get his AKC papers; something I'm going to need if I want to participate in AKC Sponsored Agility Trials. Lastly, if for whatever reason we can't keep him, we need to return him to Cathy to be placed in another home OR have Cathy's approval if we have someone who wants to adopt him. (This is because she doesn't want him to end up at a shelter.)

So... long story short... we own a Sheltie. Pete comes home on the 27th.

This next week will include purchasing the things we need (crate, collar, leash, food, toys, etc.) and finishing the puppy proofing of the home.

We are also trying to come up with a new name for him. He just DOESN'T feel like a Pete. One name we are kicking around is Bandit (since he's a little heart stealer). If you have any suggestions, feel free to post them.

Sheltie Search Update
As many of know from [info]swift_fox's journal, http://swift-fox.livejournal.com/394608.html?nc=18, we've been looking to bring a new furry friend into our den; a Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie).

Well, since that post on the 2nd of April, I've been communicating with the breeder liaison from the Three Rivers Shetland Sheepdog Club here in Pittsburgh. I've also been poking around PetFinder.com to see what Shelties were available for adoption.

No sooner did I send off an application to a Sheltie Rescue in Ohio, did I get a reply from our liaison about a breeder here in Western PA with a 7 month old undersized male sheltie in the sable coloring I prefer.

There is a picture of him in new LJ Icon and some additional ones behind the cut: Pictures of Pete )

Now, 7 months is a little younger that we were looking for but, after speaking with his breeder, the little guy is 100% crate trained and has not made a mess in his crate in quite a few months. (The only time was when he was still very young and we had that very cold snap with the negative wind chills.) He's also nearly completely house trained. The breeder's work schedule is similar to ours so that won't be a huge shock to the pup.

We will be going down to visit her and Pete, the pup's current name which I will probably change, sometime next week with Melody (our Finnish Spitz) to see how the two of the get along. If all goes well we'll go back again a few days later, without Mel, to pick up the pup and bring him home. (Experience with Mel and Candy in the car the day we brought Candy home is the reason we are going to do things this way. This will allow us to re-introduce the two of them on neutral turf before bringing Pete into the house.)

So, there is a very good chance we'll have a little Sheltie running around in about a week and half. SQUEE!!!
